What is DORA?

The Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA) is a new EU regulation that entered into force on 16th January 2023 and will apply as of 17 January 2025. We started Logiq with a global trust client working on technically complex migrations and integrations and have grown our client base from there. Logiq now CIS SecureSuite product vendor member

Logiq Limited has joined the Center for Internet Security Inc. as a CIS SecureSuite Product Vendor Member.

Membership allows product vendors the right to integrate the CIS Benchmarks™ and the CIS Controls® content into their security product and service offerings.

CIS Benchmarks and the CIS Controls are globally recognized standard best practices for securing IT systems and data against the most pervasive cyber-attacks.

James Hope (pictured), Director of Logiq said: “We see the collaboration with the CIS as an integral part of our service, as being able to help our clients in developing the best possible defence against cyber attacks is critical in today’s world. We truly believe our clients will benefit from this relationship.”

The Importance of MFA
(Multi-Factor-Authentication)

Case Example - “It’s a Fire Sale!”

Some time ago a private user did not have any MFA enabled on any accounts. An attacker had managed to breach the users credentials and had no problem with logging into amazon.co.uk using said credentials. The attacker then locked out the legitimate user from their own accounts and proceeded to purchase as many items as possible until the legitimate users bank was declining transactions as funds had run dry.

LESSON - Enable MFA. All major services such as amazon and email providers support MFA. This will prevent attackers from being able to login as you, even if they have your password.

Case Example - “Wanna Go for a Drive?”

A user was buying a new sports car and dealing with an off-island dealership. Suddenly the users phone prompts them to approve a sign in. With all that was going on that day - and that the user has been signing in and out of systems all day - they automatically (almost like a reflex) approved the sign in.

At that instant this user was compromised.

The notification was a login from Eastern Europe. The malicious attacker then managed to intercept email correspondence between the user and dealership, change the bank details on attached PDFs; compromising both Confidentiality and Integrity. The attacker was successful, as the victim wired over the money to the attacker’s bank account.

LESSON - Be vigilant to the Mobile Authenticator requests. Have you just this second entered your password into a login portal...?

What is MFA?

Multi-Factor-Authentication (MFA) is when you will be challenged to prove that it is you that has just attempted to sign into a system or service.

In recent years you’ve most likely noticed an increase of your company requesting that you set up Multi-Factor-Authentication with little to no understanding of the why. My hope is that the two case examples (mentioned above) of local incidents will give clarity.

Types of MFA (Multi-Factor-Authentication)

Text message - The original method of MFA. This is when you will receive an SMS message with a code that you are then expected to enter into a login portal.
Authenticator Applications - Applications that you can download from your App store, such as Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator. These Applications prompt you to confirm that you have just attempted to sign in, or ask you to enter the code displayed in the authenticator app (more secure still)
Phone Call - Similar to ‘Text Messages’ . The least common option. The service will call your phone and readout a numerical code that you must enter into the login portal.

In Conclusion

Always Enable MFA for logging into anything. If the ability is there? Use it.
Keep personal email/website passwords different from your work passwords.
At the very least keep your personal email password one of a kind, unused anywhere else.

Further to last week's announcement that Emanuel has joined, we would also like to take the opportunity to welcome Ross who has also recently joined us!

Ross has been working in the IT Industry for 8 years although has a lifelong passion for IT. During his professional career he has supported a range of clients, implementing a diverse range of systems, hardware and solutions.

“I enjoy the journey of learning, understanding and implementing technologies. This interest can be derived from the willingness to provide a bespoke solution or simply out of personal interest. My areas of experience are predominantly within the Microsoft suite including Microsoft 365, Azure, Active Directory and Exchange. I have also previously provided Mimecast solutions for clients which has given me insight into email solutions and security.”

Ross has recently become a proud father. He enjoys walking his dog and watching anything from a nature documentary to a crime thriller. Time permitting, he enjoys playing the occasional video game!

Emanuel has worked in the IT Industry for 17 years; he started by working for a local company providing desktop support and IT solutions for small to medium businesses across a broad range of industries.

With that level of knowing you can either innovate, or you’ll know the best action needed to move forward. ‘Take what you see and make it better or do something different/extra, then give it back so others can do the same; Like that we can all move forward’”.

Emanuel is a Certified Ethical Hacker, and as an active member of the Cybersecurity community, he enjoys partaking in Hacker Challenges and Battlegrounds. When away from his computer, he enjoys Archery, Hiking, Longboarding, and playing piano, as well as being an avid movie lover.

Jersey based IT start-up Logiq gains Microsoft Gold

After just two years in business, Jersey-based IT start-up Logiq has achieved Microsoft Gold Partner Status in Cloud Productivity. Logiq is also now a Microsoft Cloud Solutions Provider (CSP).

The team at Logiq invested time and resources to achieve the status – proof came in the form of Microsoft certification and proven delivery for clients.

The CSP is Logiq’s ability to provide the full-service Microsoft suite to its clients, including licences, direct support and access to dedicated Microsoft resources, ensuring optimised expertise is available for the business needs.

Logiq director, Giles Crouch, said: “I’m astounded and amazed by the dedication of the team and the quality of the work they’ve implemented to achieve Gold Partner status since February 2020. It’s a real testament to them and the clients we work with that has allowed us to get here so rapidly. This far outstrips the goals we had set for ourselves, especially considering the challenging and unexpected conditions presented over the past two years.”

In attaining its Gold status, Logiq consultants have achieved the Azure Solutions Architect Expert qualification and M365 Security and Identity, among others. New technology consultancy launches in Jersey

A new IT consultancy has launched in Jersey, providing infrastructure strategy and consultation, integrations for business mergers and acquisitions, cloud solutions and technical project management.

The brainchild of directors Giles Crouch and James Hope, the business has experienced a significant demand for its services despite – or possibly because of – the challenges and restrictions posed by lockdown. Equipping clients to enable home-working has been an unexpected driver for the new business.

Giles explained to Channel Eye: “Logiq has just turned one year old and we have seen our client base grow rapidly. When we first talked about forming a start-up, we wanted to identify creative solutions to help people and businesses thrive. New technology allows business transformation, making everyone’s lives that much easier. We wanted to concentrate on the foundations, the infrastructure, which allows businesses to grow and utilise the new and ever-evolving features available to them.”

Giles added: “We were quickly approached to work on a high-profile merger of two finance companies headquartered in the Channel Islands. It was a dream come true. In Jersey terms, it is an opportunity that doesn’t come along very often and to be asked to lead the infrastructure integration for such a large project straight away was extremely exciting. It showed that clients had faith in us.”

Giles and James met while working at the Channel Islands tech firm C5 Alliance. After some initial discussions, they agreed that the market could be ready for a niche consultancy, with specialist skills being provided by trusted partner companies, where the need was identified for security or business intelligence, for example.

James said: “This was a big step for us, taking the risk to work for ourselves. But it has turned out well, even with the arrival of Covid unexpectedly changing the working environment.

“We already had experience in corporate and public sector projects, including in Microsoft 365 and Azure cloud migrations, but the demands on business to suddenly roll out remote working on an unprecedented scale meant that our skills were even more relevant in the market. In fact, we had to reconfigure one key project because the initial aim of having 20% of staff working from home necessarily became 100% of staff instead.”

While projects to enable mobile working continue to be a significant requirement among Logiq’s clients, Giles and James look forward to their own next developments. The team has already grown with the introduction of associate technical consultant William Graham coming on board.
